Feature Story
Introducing a Non-Fan to the Films
Comments
During ConCarolinas 2004, a particular "Word on the Street" segment was recorded for Requiem of the Outcast, which aired in their eleventh episode. In that segment, Deanna Atkinson, soon-to-be girlfriend of yours truly, a major Star Wars "superfan," professed that she had never seen the Star Wars films and that every time she tried to watch one, she would fall asleep. "Sleeping pills," she called them. Thus, an experiment began to take shape. It's a chance to see fandom blossoming in an individual old enough to be funny, entertaining, and thoughtful enough to analyze that growing fan awareness. We would chronicle Deanna's feelings about and knowledge of the Star Wars saga before exposure to all five released films, after viewing all five films, and at every post-film interval in between, seeking to truly capture the initial fan experience in an entertaining way. This episode is the result of that experiment.
