This was a very interesting project. The first three-part Serial Edition was an experiment in making what I call an “enhanced audiobook.” I wrote a series of three short stories, meant to be listened to as a trilogy. Instead of taking a normal, chronological approach to the story, I chose to emulate the storytelling style of NBC’s Boomtown by telling the same complete story in each part, but utilizing a different character’s point of view each time, so that the story could build, layer by layer, rather than as a simple sequence of events. Rather than simply recording this as an audiobook, where it would just be me reading the story, I decided to go ahead and cast the three speaking parts. The final project was successful, with the story, which I narrated, drawing people in, and the performances by Ian Bowie, Krista Kolesar, and Mike Lane keeping people interested.
